AGBU is a proud sponsor of the Armenian Republican Interschool Chess Tournament. The objectives of the national student tournament is to support the development of chess in Armenia, foster new talent and help maintain Armenia’s leading position in the world chess community.

This year, about 700 schools from across Armenia, Karabakh and Javakh competed for the championship title. AGBU provided 2000 chess boards to participating schools and awarded medals and personal computers to the winning teams.

Last Saturday, Armenia’s special affection for chess caught the eye of the BBC, which published an intriguing article and audio podcast titled, “Armenian Revels its Chess Prowess:”

Armenia, with a population of three million, has won the last two men’s world team chess championships, beating opponents including Russia, China, and the US. What is their secret? David Edmonds travelled to the country to find out.

On Thursday, September 17th, 2009, a 164 kW Solar Electric System will be commissioned during a 2:00 p.m. dedication ceremony at the AGBU Manoogian Demirdjian School in Canoga Park, CA.

His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian the primate of the Armenian Church of North America Western Diocese, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, California Assemblyman Paul Krekorian; chair of the new select committee on renewable energy, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine, AGBU MDS School Board of Trustees Chairman Sinan Sinanian, AGBU local leadership, parents and other dignitaries will be present to celebrate the successful operation of one of the largest Solar Electric Systems to be functioning on any private school in Los Angeles.

The 164kW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system generates approximately 300,000 kilowatt hours of electricity for the daycare thru 12th grade school. The 992 solar modules covering 15,000 square feet of roof space satisfy 40% of the school’s current electric needs.

“Ever since our Gymnasium facility has been covered with solar panels we have experienced a significant reduction in the need to use air conditioning for this building. The shade provided by the modules, is one of the incidental benefits, not to mention the protection of the roof material from direct sun,” says Levon Keshishian, director of Business Operations who oversees facilities management of the school.

New School Term Begins at AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School

MDSOpeningDay

The following article appeared in Nor Or weekly of California (September 10, 2009, p. 6.). It was translated and abridged by Aris Sevag of the AGBU Press Office in New York:

The doors of AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School reopened for the 2009-2010 school year on Wednesday, August 26, for elementary and secondary school pupils alike.

Present were a large number of parents, members of the school board, as well as members of the educational committee. The priority of making the 2009-2010 school year one of positive changes was highlighted in all the remarks delivered at the opening ceremony. The school, which has been certified several times by WASC and has over one thousand graduates, enjoys the support of the members of its Alumni Association, who have achieved success in various fields, PTO, Booster Club, Festival committees, and AGBU. The school has student, Armenian, AGBU and other clubs, which expand the pupils’ horizons through extracurricular activity and train them to subsequently assume active roles in the more professional internal communal, as well as the larger American, environment.

Following the brief opening remarks and words of welcome by Principal Hagop Hagopian, Archpriest Fr. Shnork Demirjian, pastor of St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church and a parent himself, prayed for the school’s welfare. Then Sinan Sinanian, chairman of the board of trustees [and member of AGBU Central Board of Directors], presented certain changes having been made in the school’s administrative staff and welcomed Mrs. Anahid Nalbandian-Pezheshgian as vice principal of the secondary school. Mr. Sinanian stressed that the changes made aim to increase the school’s potential and then declared the school open.

“Lesson in Patriotism through the Work of Alex Manoogian” Article

AbovianSchoolAlexManoogianarticle

The following Armenian-language article appeared in Nor Or weekly of California (Sept. 3, 2009, p. 3), and was provided by the Republic of Armenia’s Diaspora Ministry. It was translated into English by Aris Sevag of the AGBU Press Office:

Lesson in Patriotism through the Work of Alex Manoogian

September 1, “Knowledge Day,” at School No. 6 in Abovian was marked with a program, in which the 8th grade was named Alex Manoogian, after the great Armenian benefactor. The name of the honorary life president of the Armenian General Benevolent Union was bestowed on the class by decision of the school’s student council.

During the program, the schoolchildren staged a performance symbolizing the victory of good over evil and greed, in which the figure of the Armenian philanthropist Alex Manoogian came to life. The plot of the production, which was accompanied by song and recitation, developed in a Western Armenian environment. The words of great Armenians about the work and role of A. Manoogian were also spoken. The 20-plus students of the class bearing his name vowed to remain faithful to Alex Manoogian’s precepts, work and life. The pupils of the 6th grade bearing the name Karekin Nezhdeh, who stood in a row in military uniform, congratulated them.

Present at this festive performance was RA Diaspora Minister Hranush Hakobian, who quoted from Movses Khorenatsi – “Ignorance supported wickedness.” She added, “The hero of today’s lesson, the brilliant representative of our people Alex Manoogian, is indeed a symbol of goodness.” In presenting his patriotic work serving the cause of national preservation, she mentioned that the great benefactor applied his financial strength in various countries of the world, founding schools, cultural centers and churches.
