AGBU is a proud sponsor of the Armenian Republican Interschool Chess Tournament. The objectives of the national student tournament is to support the development of chess in Armenia, foster new talent and help maintain Armenia’s leading position in the world chess community.
This year, about 700 schools from across Armenia, Karabakh and Javakh competed for the championship title. AGBU provided 2000 chess boards to participating schools and awarded medals and personal computers to the winning teams.
Last Saturday, Armenia’s special affection for chess caught the eye of the BBC, which published an intriguing article and audio podcast titled, “Armenian Revels its Chess Prowess:”
Armenia, with a population of three million, has won the last two men’s world team chess championships, beating opponents including Russia, China, and the US. What is their secret? David Edmonds travelled to the country to find out.
