YPGNY Performs a “Spring Concert” for the Residents of the NY Armenian Home

On Sunday, April 18, 2010, residents of the New York Armenian Home in Flushing, Queens, were treated to a “Spring Concert” organized by the AGBU Young Professionals of Greater New York (YPGNY), featuring the talents of young Armenian pianists Karine Poghosyan and Nairi Badal.

Buenos Aires Hosts Ambassadors, Visiting AGBU Leadership

AGBU’s Buenos Aires Center welcomed ambassadors from France and Armenia on the weekend of March 20, 2010, as well as Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Montevideo, Uruguay, chapter chairmen and AGBU Central Board of Directors member Joseph Basralian.

France’s ambassador to Argentina, Jean-Pierre Asdvadzadourian, was accompanied by members of the French-Armenian community when he met with AGBU chapter directors and dined at the restaurant of the Instituto Marie Manoogian, AGBU’s Buenos Aires school, on the evening of March 20.

Earlier the same day, Krikor Manukian, AGBU Sao Paolo chairman, and Dr. Gustavo Zulamian, AGBU Montevideo chairman, met with Antonio Sarafian and Rubén Kechichian of the Buenos Aires leadership and members of the youth league to discuss short and long-term projects pursued by the region’s chapters. AGBU Buenos Aires was pleased to have present Armenia’s ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay, Vladimir Karmirshalyan, who spoke briefly about events in Armenia.

On March 19, the Buenos Aires leadership welcomed AGBU Central Board member Joseph Basralian and his wife, Jackie, who toured the chapter’s projects in the city and later met with Rubén Kechichian and Hampartzoum Haladjian, president and vice-president of the chapter, at the Instituto Marie Manoogian.

Armenian Genocide Survivors Meet with Robert M. Morgenthau

On Wednesday, April 21, 2010, four Armenian Genocide survivors, over 97 years young, met with Robert M. Morgenthau to tour “The Morgenthaus: A Legacy of Service” exhibit at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City.

AUA Announces Appointment of New President

From the AUA Press Office, we received the following email announcement:

The American University of America (AUA) has announced the appointment of Dr. Bruce M. Boghosian as President of the University, effective late summer 2010. Dr. Boghosian is Professor and Chair of Mathematics at Tufts University. A distinguished scholar with numerous publications to his credit, he holds a B.S. degree in physics and an M.S. degree in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Applied Science and Engineering from the University of California, Davis. Dr. Boghosian has held visiting positions at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, Peking University, University College London, University of California Berkeley, International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre, University of California Davis, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Vahan Mardirossian’s Exceptional Concert in Montreal

The solo concert by prominent pianist Vahan Mardirossian, which was organized by the AGBU Montreal Chapter, took place in Montreal on February 21, 2010. The evening’s guest of honor was the renowned conductor Prof. Raffi Armenian.

Vahan Mardirossian was born in Yerevan. Upon graduation from the Spendiarian Music School, he was accepted into the composition department of Yerevan’s Komitas Conservatory in 1992. However, shortly thereafter, he left for France to continue his studies in the Paris Conservatory. Graduating with honorable distinction, he won the first piano and the chamber music prizes. The Armenian Genocide in Today’s New York Times

The Committee for the Affirmation of the Armenian Genocide placed an ad in the Op-Ed section of today’s New York Times. The Committee is composed of:

  • Knights and Daughters of Vartan;
  • AGBU;
  • Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern);
  • Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America;
  • Armenian Catholic Eparchy for the US & Canada;
  • Armenian Assembly of America;
  • Armenian National Committee of America;
  • Armenian Democratic Liberal Party; and
  • Armenian Council of America.

Yerevan Scouts Holds Palm Sunday Craft Sale at Arabkir Center

On Sunday, March 28, on the occasion of the Palm Sunday, the AGBU Yerevan Scout Council organized an exhibition and sale of works at the AGBU and Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin Youth Center in the Arabkir district of Yerevan.

The visitors were offered Easter sweets, goods and souvenirs hand-made by the members of the AGBU Yerevan Scout movement and women’s committee. Continue reading
