Alex & Marie Manoogian School Students Awarded in Detroit Essay Competition

On Sunday, April 25, 2010 and before a crowd of more than 400 attendees, the Armenian Genocide Committee of greater Detroit announced the winners of the third annual essay competition at the 95th Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide hosted by St. John Armenian Church. This is the third year for the statewide competition.

Among the 2010 winners were two AGBU Alex & Marie Manoogian School students:

  • second place winner (High School category) Ari Sagherian, 9th Grade
  • first place winner (Middle School category), Karoun Tcholakian, 8th grade.

Enroll Now for Armenian Virtual College’s Summer 2010 Term

Learning has never been so easy!

The AGBU Armenian Virtual College is pleased to announce the opening of its enrollment period for Summer Term 2010. Courses in Eastern Armenian, Western Armenian, History of Armenia and Introduction to Armenian Architecture are offered in multiple languages, including Eastern Armenian, Western Armenian, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Enrollment ends  June 6, 2010. Classes start on Monday, June 21, and end on August 24.

NYSEC Host Lecture on Women’s Health by Dr. Orli Etingin

On Thursday, April 15, AGBU’s New York Special Events Committee hosted Dr. Orli Etingin at the organization’s Central Office in Manhattan. Dr. Etingin spoke to 35 guests about women’s health and protecting the heart, brain, and bones.  The lecture was followed by questions from attendees and a lunch.

Dr. Etingin is board certified in internal medicine and hematology. She is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center and is the Lisa and Sanford B. Ehrenkranz Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Etingin is also the founder and Medical Director of the Iris Cantor Women’s Health Center, a multidisciplinary group practice.

Aleppo’s Gomidas Chamber Orchestra Perform at Gregory of Narek Church in Vanadzor, Armenia

The Gomidas Chamber Orchestra of the Armenian Youth Association of AGBU’s Aleppo Chapter gave a concert on May 4 in the hall of St. Gregory of Narek Church, which is the seat of the primate of the Diocese of Gugark in northern Armenia.

The program consisted of works by Vivaldi, Schubert and other well-known composers, followed by an encore. The musicians, who are youths between the ages of 18 and 25, also gave a marvelous rendition of works by Gomidas and Khachaturian. In attendance were clergymen, artists, intellectuals, students and pupils.

YP London Organizes a Dinner for French & British Armenians

On April 30th, the Young Professionals of London organized a dinner with live music and invited London Armenians to welcome 60 French Armenians from AGBU youth chapters in Paris and Lyon. There were over 100 YPs and youth in attendance. The dinner was followed by a party with Greek and Armenian music.
