Plovdiv Saturday School’s Graduation Event

Students during a performance of the play "Kioksi Maha"

To close out the 2009-2010 academic year, the AGBU Plovdiv Chapter’s Saturday school held a graduation ceremony and production of five plays in front of parents, AGBU members, and a vast audience at the Armenian Culture House. The plays included “Kach Nazar” (Nazar the Brave) by Hovhannes Tumanyan; “Kioksi Maha” (The Death of Kioks); “Karmir Klkharguh” (The Red Hat); “Aragile yev Aghvese” (The Stork and the Fox); and “Mrchune yev Chpure” (The Ant and the Cricket). Besides the young students who performed, the production was made possible by Teodora Cherneva, Mariam Kanaleva, Hacho Manukyan, Malvina Manukyan, and Stepan Parsehyan.

The underlying goal of presenting these plays was to help the students gain language proficiency – children were asked to learn not only their own lines but also the lines of their friends and fellow performers, enhancing their communication skills and confidence. The chairman of AGBU Plovdiv, Roupen Chavushian, acknowledged all students and teachers of the Saturday school for their achievements and granted certificates to the graduates. Verjinia Garabedian, chairman of the Educational Committee of AGBU Plovdiv and director of the Armenian School, conveyed her regards to the guests as well. She also gave special mention to student Beniamna Airapetaina, who travels 45km each Saturday to attend classes.

Toronto Hosts Book Signing of Garin K. Hovannisian’s “Family of Shadows”

Author Garin K. Hovannisian during the launch of his new book Family of Shadows

On December 7, 2010, Garin K. Hovannisian launched his new book, Family of Shadows, at AGBU’s Alex Manoogian Cultural Center in Toronto. Hovannisian is a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship in Creative Writing and the Lynton Award for Book Writing; he is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

In his compelling lecture, Hovannisian read selected excerpts from his new book, which tells the tale of the Hovannisian family through several generations, haunted by the events of the 1915 genocide, and torn between dreams of rebirth for their ancestral homeland and success in the United States. Attendees were moved and overwhelmed by the author’s passion and deep understanding of his family’s history. A question and answer group discussion followed Hovannisian’s book reading. Nearly 100 people attended the event.

Human Rights Defender of Armenia Speaks at Euro Parliament

From November 15 -18, 2010, Human Rights Defender of Armenia Armen Harutyunyan was in Brussels meeting with members of the European Union and speaking with the European Parliament. The trip was organized as part of a series of events organized by AGBU Europe in the context of its work with the European institutions. AGBU Europe’s representation in Brussels carries out advocacy work with EU institutions on issues related to culture, education, and intercultural dialogue, on the EU’s relationship with the Republics of Armenia and Karabakh, and Turkey’s negotiations to join the European Union.

During his visit, Harutyunyan met with Milan Cabrnoch, Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia; Heidi Hautala, Chair of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights; Peter Semneby, European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus; and Gunnar Wiegand, responsible for Eastern Europe, the Southern Caucasus and Central Asia of the European Commission. A number of meetings were held to discuss pressing matters facing the European nations and the rest of the world. Addressing members of Parliament, Harutyunyan explained that despite efforts to reform, Armenia, like other post-Soviet states, was still far from being the democratic nation it aspires to be; he emphasized that as long as its system remains oligarchic and its economic and political powers intermingled, democracy cannot prevail. In order to reinforce the country’s economic development, the Human Rights Defender recommended institutional reforms, which are indispensible to manage the transition from oligarchy to capitalism, for securing the respect for human rights and to invigorate civil society. Harutyunyan also spoke at a round-table of experts convened jointly by AGBU Europe and European Friends of Armenia, and held a debate with the Armenian community in Brussels.

A series of seminars, round-tables, and meetings continue to be organized regularly in order to initiate and nurture strategic thinking within AGBU Europe and the Armenian diaspora on AGBU Europe’s interests and aspirations, on their relevance to the EU’s agenda and on the best way to achieve them in this context.
