Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra Reaching Out to Youth

APO performing at the Armenian-Russian University on February 18, 2011.

On February 18, the Armenian State Philharmonic Orchestra (APO) held a concert at the Armenian-Russian (Slavonic) University hall. Young and talented violinist Anush Nikoghosian was an invited soloist for the concert, which took place under the baton of Maestro Eduard Topchjan.

The program included Dvorak’s violin symphony and passages from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” ballet.

This event was one stop in a larger series created by APO with the goal of increasing interest among youth, particularly college students, toward classical music. On March 8, APO performed at the Yerevan State Medical University, and on April 7, the Orchestra played at the Yerevan State Pedagogical University.

APO Director Rusanna Sirunian said that APO’s concert initiative at institutes of higher learning has received the support of Armenia’s Culture Ministry. “We have so far met and agreed with the rectors of three universities: Armenian-Russian, Yerevan State Medical and Pedagogical universities. As well as the Friday evening concerts at ‘Aram Khachatrian’ concert hall, APO will perform at the aforementioned universities. We have selected popular classical pieces, which we are sure will appeal to the youth. Let’s not forget that today’s youth is the generation of the beginning of the 90’s, who, among other things, were also deprived of any interaction with classic art,” Sirunian said. She also mentioned that these concerts would be free.

On March 27, Professor Kim Servart Theriault spoke about “Arshile Gorky and the Development of Abstract Expressionism” at the AGBU Chicago center (7248 N. Harlem Ave, Chicago).

Assistant professor of art history, theory, and criticism at Dominican University in Illinois, Dr. Theriault addressed the importance of Arshile Gorky as an initiator of Abstract Expressionism, America’s first internationally significant art movement. Her lecture focused on how the artist developed a painting style instigated by his status as an immigrant, Armenian Genocide survivor, and his cultural background. She focused on Gorky’s work “The Liver is the Cock’s Comb” (1944), which was recently featured in a US stamp series honoring Abstract Expressionism.
