Glendale/Pasadena Basketball Tournament

The athletic department of AGBU Glendale/Pasadena organized its first North American Basketball tournament this past summer during the Fourth of July weekend. Teams from the San Fernando Valley, Montreal, and Toronto participated in this exciting event. Games commenced on June 30, 2010, and concluded with the closing ceremonies on July 3, 2010.

Off the courts, the visiting teams were welcomed by the locals to tour some of the highlights of Los Angeles during their stay. The young athletes visited the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Chinese Mann Theater, and the famous Rodeo Drive. They also enjoyed a day trip to Hurricane Harbor Water Park, as well as an evening full of Middle Eastern food and music. Guests also had the privilege of celebrating the Fourth of July watching the fireworks at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. These events provided an opportunity to establish friendships. Chairman of the AGBU Glendale/Pasadena Chapter Shahe Seuylemezian commented, “Our goal was to establish a sense of belonging for both our local athletes and our guests — to validate the significance that we all belong to the worldwide community of AGBU, [sharing] in its standards and beliefs … Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our athletic department, I hope we were able to achieve just that, and more.”

Fortunately, it seems as though the visiting athletes and guests were in agreement with Seuylemezian’s thoughts. At the closing ceremony, the representatives of the Montreal Chapter, Garo Sofuian, Zaven Kazandjiian, and Kevork Dilanian, as well as the representatives of the Toronto Chapter, Hagop Semerdjian and Vicken Ampagoumian, expressed their gratitude to the host community for their geniality. Irrespective of the competition on court, both communities concurred that efforts should be maintained to establish an annual tournament and, ultimately, sustain the warm relations established.
