On December 7, 2010, Garin K. Hovannisian launched his new book, Family of Shadows, at AGBU’s Alex Manoogian Cultural Center in Toronto. Hovannisian is a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship in Creative Writing and the Lynton Award for Book Writing; he is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
In his compelling lecture, Hovannisian read selected excerpts from his new book, which tells the tale of the Hovannisian family through several generations, haunted by the events of the 1915 genocide, and torn between dreams of rebirth for their ancestral homeland and success in the United States. Attendees were moved and overwhelmed by the author’s passion and deep understanding of his family’s history. A question and answer group discussion followed Hovannisian’s book reading. Nearly 100 people attended the event.
