AGBU Sao Paulo celebrated its 46th anniversary at a gala dinner-dance held on October 24, 2010 with over 400 guests in attendance, including all the prominent members of the local Armenian community, as well as local politicians.
On this occasion, Hilda Diruhy Burmaian was honored as the 2010 Person of the Year and presented with a silver-engraved plate by AGBU Sao Paulo Chapter Chairman Krikor Manukian. Burmaian is well known for her philanthropy, including underwriting the renovation costs of several local churches, which was announced on local television. She was recently named honorary consul of the Republic of Armenia in Sao Paulo.
In paying tribute to Burmaian, AGBU Sao Paulo also honored the memory of her late husband Varujan, a prominent industrialist, community leader and philanthropist of Sao Paulo, who was the longtime chairman of the local chapter, as well as the first president of the local branch of “Haiastan” All-Armenian Fund.
In attendance were the Burmaians’ sons, Ricardo, who served recently as vice chairman of AGBU Sao Paulo, and his wife, as well as Alexandre and his wife. For the first time in the history of this chapter, a band was brought in from abroad, Gomidas Band of Aleppo, which was very well received by the guests.
